Charlotte Jansen Talk

Charlotte Jansen is a culture journalist photographer focus on contemporary art, now more focusing on social practice and visual culture. For this talk, she brings her work "Girl on Girl", which start in 2015 published in 2017. The main content of this talk is about Female Gaze, what is Female Gaze, what it means today. Jansen pointed out in the talk that when we imagine women's bodies, we will be affected by the photos we see every day, such as slim bodies and shiny skin. These will become our expectations of women, and when women fail to meet the requirements, they will be "not good-looking". Female Gaze in history can be traced back to Claude Cohoun, Germaine Krall, who gave a different perspective through the camera. The current Female Gaze started around 2010, and young artists started on emerging social media (Instagrams). At the same time, there is a lack of male photos taken by women, which represents a different way of seeing themselves from men. What impressed me the most in this talk is that Jansen said that FemaleGaze is not only about women, it is to change the way society views women, and it is the same for men.
